Administrative Code Archives
Did you know you can find Administrative Codes in the Casemaker archives? To find these codes, visit the Casemaker home page by clicking on Home in the upper right or the Casemaker logo in the upper left. Now you should see the list of states. Above that list of states is a blue bar with a tab for Archive. Next click on Administrative Code then on the state you wish to view. Citing References While it is great to get that green thumbs up or red thumbs down from Casecheck+ to tell you if a case has been treated negatively in subsequent cases - it is also nice just to have a list of what actually cited the case you are reading. This is where Citing References comes in. When you are reading a case, you will notice in the bar above the case a link for Citing References. This will provide you with a list of cases that have cited this case. Links to these cases are included and will take you directly to the portion where the case you are researching is involved. When you pull up the list of Citing References you can narrow the results by keyword or jurisdiction using the menu on the left as well. Legal Materials from over 100 countries! Changing the Size on the Screen in Casemaker
When you are looking at a document in Casemaker you have the ability to increase the font with just one click. In the toolbar above the content of the document is a button with both a large and a small letter A (Aa). The first click on this will make the text size significantly larger, and with a second click, it returns to standard size. Do you need more control or perhaps more than one step larger or smaller? You can zoom in or out on your Windows computer by holding down the CRTL key and hitting the + key (for larger) or the – key (for smaller). On a Mac computer, your key combination would be COMMAND and the + key (for larger) and COMMAND and the – key (for smaller). The Graph Icon After performing a search you will notice to the far right of any of the results in your results list is a graph icon. Clicking this icon will plot, on a line graph, the number of times the case has been cited over the years. Hovering over the dots provided will tell you how many times it was cited in that year specifically, and clicking on the dot will provide you with a listing of clickable links to those cases from that year. Signing Out Upon clicking our Sign Out link you will be logged out of the system and provided with a Session Summary. This is a listing of everything you did while logged in. Complete with a date and time stamp, and client labels. Of course, the searches and documents are stored in your history as well! The Advanced Search
In the left sidebar on the home page is the Advanced Search link. Clicking this link will allow you to type in specific search information in a combination of your choosing, including citation case name docket number court attorney judge panel and date range. When using the advanced search link you will still use the jurisdiction drop down menu to pick your search area first. Then you can use the link to enter your specific information. Searching for Statutes Perhaps you want to search for a statute and you already know the statute number. You could, of course, choose to browse to the statute. To do so you would click on the state, statutes, title, the chapter, and finally, the section number to get to it. You also could search from the homepage. Simply type in the statute number, and make sure to set the jurisdiction to the state the statute is in. Then choose the Section radio button from below the search bar. Then click the blue search button. The statute will come right up. Note: Selecting the Section radio button is important. Casemaker defaults to a keyword search setting. So while the statute you are looking for may appear, so will any other documents that may contain that particular string of numbers. Accessing Casemaker - A Valued Member Benefit! Casemaker is provided to you as a benefit of your bar association membership. You get case law, statutes, rules, regulations and more for all fifty state and federal jurisdictions. To access Casemaker, simply log in to the bar website and click on the Casemaker link in the member’s area. You will be automatically transferred into Casemaker from the bar. Remember to access Casemaker you must go through the bar's website every time. To save time, bookmark the bar’s website! Once you are Casemaker you can register for free webinar training by clicking the Webinar link in the upper right of the Casemaker screen. What do I need to use Casemaker?
Casemaker supports the most up to date versions of Safari, Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome browsers. Casemaker also recommends users obtain the most up to date versions of Flash and Acrobat Reader to utilize the Copy With Citation function and to read PDF documents. Just a reminder, to access Casemaker you must always log in to your bar association website and click on the Casemaker link. My Settings Clicking on My Settings from the homepage allows you to customize Casemaker in several ways. You can set the primary email you would like to send cases to. You can set the default jurisdiction for your searches. You can also set preferred document types and page formatting as well. In addition, you can set the preferred sort method of your results from this page if you wish. Tracking a Client Casemaker offers you tools to help you track the work you do such as the Client Tracking tool. Click on Client in the upper right of Casemaker. From here you can add or select a client to use. Once a client is selected, Casemaker will track and log any research you do in the system. When you sign out of Casemaker using the Sign Out link in the upper right, you will be given a report of the hours you spent researching for that client. Annotating Statutes
There are times you need to know if any cases mention a particular statute. Casemaker can help! To see cases which reference a particular statute – pull up the statute in question to read the content. You will notice a bar running along the top of the statute. In that bar is a tab labeled Annotator. Clicking on this link will pull up any cases that cite the statute you are viewing. Using proximity search. If you type in the word tax and the word annuity in the search bar Casemaker will pull up every document that has the word tax and the word annuity in it. Sadly that may not be what you are looking for. Proximity searches are great for getting closer to the issue. When using Casemaker w/ means “within” so w/5 would mean within five words. So for example, if you wanted to find cases where the word tax was mentioned near the word annuity you could enter tax w/5 annuity. If you wanted to find tax mentioned a bit further from annuity you could try tax w/25 annuity. Changing Font Size You have the ability to increase the font with just one click. When you are viewing a document in Casemaker you can click on the button labeled Aa in the gray bar above the document content. By clicking on this button the text size gets significantly larger. Click it again and it returns to standard size. Casemaker Weekly Update - February 15thCasemaker Libra allows users to lease digital versions of books and materials with updates included. Citecheck Citecheck saves you time by verifying all the citations in a document. Simply upload a document such as a brief, pleading or even just a list of citations, then in a few moments, Citecheck will return a report which indicates if there has been negative treatment on any of the citations in the document. Citecheck can be found under the Features tab (formerly Tools) on the main Casemaker page. Sorting Results Did you know you can sort your results by more than just relevance? Once you have completed a search, click on the View All link to see all the results in the document category you prefer. Once you do this you can sort these results by selecting a sort method from the dark gray bar above the results list. You can sort by Relevance, Most Cited, Date Decided or State (Ascending or Descending). Lost? Click on the Casemaker logo in the upper left at any time to return to the Casemaker home page. You can also return to the home page by clicking the Home link in the upper right corner of Casemaker. Citation Format and Autocorrect Casemaker uses the Bluebook citation format. Casemaker also will auto-correct your citations for you. For example, if you enter 567 f3d 1120 in the search bar, Casemaker will correct your entry to 567 F.3d 1120. If you need to disable this for any reason, simply check the Turn off Autocorrect box before performing your search. Using the Advanced Search
If you look on the left side of your home screen under the heading My Accounts section you can see a column of links. Located here is the Advanced Search link. Clicking this link will allow you to type in specific search information in a combination of your choosing, including citation, case name, docket number, court, attorney, judge, panel and date range. When using the advanced search link you will still use the jurisdiction drop down menu to pick your search area. Then you can use the link to enter your specific information. For example, you can select your jurisdiction and locate all cases, from January 1st of this year through today, decided by a particular judge. You can then use the facets in the left menu again to narrow that down even farther if you like. Searching for Cases with Citation The most frequently used function of Casemaker for most users is searching by citation. From the home page you can simply type your citation in. You do not have to worry about being too picky if you use the wrong spacing, punctuation, or capitalization; Casemaker will automatically correct that for you. You do however need to make sure you are using only the reporter citation and the proper abbreviation. Casemaker goes by the Blue Book citation guidelines if you have any questions regarding abbreviations. For example, with Kearns v. Ford Motor Co., 567 F.3d 1120 (9th Cir. 2009), all you would put in the search bar is 567 F.3d 1120. Be sure you select the correct jurisdiction however – you will not be able to pull up a New Hampshire Superior Court case when searching in US Court of Appeals! Sometimes a particular citation brings up more than one result, and there is a very good reason for this. The other case shares a page with the case you were searching for. For example, your case may end on page 104 and another case begins on the same page of the reporter. This means even if you are typing in a pincite, you will still be able to locate the case you are looking for. Archived Session Laws You likely have found need to see the session law that affected a statute in the past. You can see these previous session laws in Casemaker. From the home page click on Archive in the blue bar above the list of states. Next click on Session Laws. From here you can select your state and then the year of interest. Note – Federal libraries are in this list as well! Wondering how to set up CasemakerDigest?
First, you will need to log in to Casemaker, via the bar association's website. Once on the Casemaker Homepage you will see the Features tab in the blue navigation bar, you can click this tab and then click the link for CasemakerDigest to access the Digest system which will open in a new window. On the CasemakerDigest page you will see four icons in the top right section of the blue toolbar. One of these icons is for email, it looks like an envelope with the @ symbol on it. Click this icon. The filters screen will open displaying your options. Here you can update or change current filters, delete filters you no longer want, and create new ones. For now, we will review adding a new filter. To add a new filter, first click the Add button. A new window will appear with filter and email options. First give your new filter a name in the top box. Then you can move on to set up what content you would like to receive. You have a lot of options to choose from when setting up your CasemakerDigest content. You can set up your filters by: Jurisdiction: This will also allow you select a jurisdiction including related federal just like in Casemaker Court: This will narrow to a chosen court or courts Judge: This will give cases decided by a particular judge. Category - Do you want Criminal or Civil? Both? Practice Area: Here you can select the practice area that interests you. Keyword: Looking for new cases mentioning a particular word? Enter that word here. Type: Published or Unpublished Opinions? Maybe both? Keep in mind, you can also leave any of these options blank to get all the content in the category. Next you can set up the emails themselves. Frequency: Daily or Weekly - How often do you want to get your emails? Status: Inactive or Active - You can set your filter to Inactive or Active to tell the system if you want emails or not. Are you going to be out of the office a while? Do you want to run a filter only when you need it? Then set it to inactive and no emails will be sent. Schedule: This sends emails summaries only during the dates you specify. Finally you can let CasemakerDigest know if you want any additional information in the Email Output Options. For example, if there are no summaries you can decide to get an email telling you as such, or you can opt out of that notification. You can include information about the criteria of the filter you created if you would like. That criteria can appear at the top or bottom of the email you receive. Informative statistics can be included if you wish, such as the number of summaries in the time frame of your emails. Again this information can appear at the top or bottom of the email. After all of your selections have been made you can save your filter. Your filter now will be used to send an email of new cases at the schedule you specified. You also can get an email manually at anytime– simply click Run Now and CasemakerDigest will immediately send any emails that are relevant to your filter for the dates you selected These changes and new options are the first steps in a planned redesign of the CasemakerDigest system. We hope you find them helpful and we will keep you informed of more changes as they happen! You can always go home again! Click on the Home link in the upper right or the Casemaker logo in the upper left and you will be returned to the home page where you can find links to materials for all 50 states and federal jurisdictions, information about features, and links to archived statutes and acts.
How often do you need to reference laws? More than once a year right? Once a bill is signed into law, Casemaker's editors obtain the legislation and work it into the existing code or compilation. They are constantly reviewing and updating the data to ensure currency and accuracy. Casemaker Statutes are continuously updated rather than just once a year! Just one more reason Casemaker is a valued member benefit! You got called away from your desk and when you came back and you were logged out of Casemaker. This is normal. Casemaker will log you out after a period of inactivity to help protect your privacy. But do not worry, you can get back to what you were researching! Log back into Casemaker via the bar website. Once you are in the Casemaker system click on "History" in the upper right. This will provide you with a complete history of all the searches you’ve created, and documents you’ve viewed since logging into the Casemaker system. Each item in the History comes complete with a date and time stamp, as well as a client label if you performed it while logged in to a client. You can find what you were doing in Casemaker before lunch or last week! If you would like you can clear your history at time by using the drop down menu at the top right of your history list. Did you download the Casemaker Mobile App? Is it asking for a code or password? To use the Casemaker mobile application your must register online. To do so, you will need to access the Casemaker website through your Bar Association website using your computer. Once you have entered Casemaker on the left side of the screen there is an area called "My Accounts". (If you are not seeing "My Accounts" click on the link in the upper right that says Home.) Below "My Accounts" you will see a link for "Mobile Application". Clicking this will direct you to a form to fill out and submit to receive a reference code. Please note that the reference code is case sensitive. Now, open the mobile application on your device. You may be asked for a username and password or for a reference code. Your username is the email address you used to register the mobile application. Your password is the reference code you received. If you get a new device you can come back to the Mobile Application link to get your code.
Ever wonder how the courts have interpreted a statute? You can find out easily by using the "Annotator" function in Casemaker. While viewing the content of a statute simply click on "Annotator" in the dark grey bar. Here you will find a list of cases which mention the statute you are viewing.
